‘Can You See Us’ is an opportunity for introspection

With all the discourse around diversity, equity and inclusion globally, how inclusive are Africans truly? In parts of Africa especially West and Central, race might not be a topic of debate. However, other diversity issues like albinism are and they have not been explored much in African film and television. In fact, MultiChoice Africa was praised for promoting inclusion when Ebubu entered the Big Brother Titans (Ziyakhala Wahala) show as one of the housemates in January 2023. Now, the film ‘Can You See Us’ that is streaming on Netflix provides an opportunity for introspection by Africans.

‘Can You See Us,’ follows the story of Joseph, a Zambian boy with albinism who was rejected by his father at birth and how he navigates life to self-discovery.

Joseph’s mother Chama must make a life for herself and her new born when she is forced to leave her matrimonial home. She is met with kindness by her taxi driver and starts a new life in the suburbs away from prying eyes. Joseph is raised in a home filled with love and is home schooled by his mother. But like any child, he is curious. He cannot understand why his mother will not allow him to go out to play with other kids.

One fateful afternoon, left alone at home, Joseph decides to take his new toy car outside for a spin. That decision would lead Joseph to realise that he is different but it will also usher in some great friendships into his life. Ultimately, all’s well that ends well.

Joseph is played by Thabo Kaamba, a girl, who is compelling in the lead role. The story is inspired by the life of John Chiti, a popular Zambian singer with albinism. It is a well-told and relatable story about society, friendship and love that should make us kinder. The film will tug at your heartstrings. It will take you on a roller coaster of emotions from when Joseph asks his adoptive father Martin “What is mwabi” to when he smiles at Sharon and asks Brenda, “You want to abandon me”?

‘Can You See Us’ is the first Zambian feature film on Netflix. It has certainly whet our appetite.
